Design and Technology/Engineering Technician

Design & Technology/Engineering Technician – St Paul’s Juniors and St Paul’s School

Line Manager:  Head of Department (Junior Engineering)

Role

The aim of this post is to provide effective technician support for teaching and learning within the Engineering Department (across Junior and Senior schools). Key working relationships include the full time technician.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Preparation of materials, resources, components, and equipment for year 5 to year 11 school teaching groups.

2. Keeping and updating costings of all Junior projects according to SOW provided.

3. Stock control and submitting timely order requests for materials and resources through Senior School Technician.

4. Technical and teaching support across Junior teaching groups and some Senior groups as required.

5. Assisting in departmental administration e.g. managing Club lists, photo files.

6. Assisting during 8+ & 11+ Open Day mornings, two Saturdays; November and June.

7. Maintaining the workshop area in a tidy, safe and well-ordered state – performing daily checks.

8. Setting up and setting down for all Junior lessons, including safe, organised storage of work.

9. Making jigs and resources for Junior Projects as required.

10. Managing display work and the timely return of completed work to students.

11. Keeping a record of credits earned for club attendance and display work.

12. Managing photographic records of finished work for each teaching set.

13. Organising resources and storage for Junior materials and project work in progress.

14. Running Junior (Yr 5 – Yr.8) lunchtime workshops (twice weekly 12.30 -1.15pm).

15. Support before and during cover lessons alongside Cover teaching staff.

16. Participating in departmental meetings and departmental development plans, including Health and Safety.

17. Act as department First Aider.

18. Keeping machine and tool skills and legal safety training (DATA) up to date.

19. Any other reasonable request as required.

20. All staff have a responsibility and duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils. Staff must be aware of the systems within the School which support safeguarding and must act in accordance with the School’s Safeguarding & Child Protection policy and Code of Conduct. Staff will receive appropriate child protection training which is regularly updated.

Essential skills and qualifications

• Experience of working in an environment similar to the Design and Technology learning area

• Capable of working alone or as part of team

• Self-motivated, be able to manage a busy work schedule and able to work to deadlines

• Engineering/Manufacturing related qualification

• Excellent organisational skills

• Strong team work approach

• Competent IT skills

• High level problem solving skills

• Proven practical skills

• Awareness of health and safety issues

• Excellent communication skills appropriate to instructing students in the correct and safe use of workshop resources and equipment

Desirable skills and qualifications

• Recognised workshop machinery health and safety qualification(s) DATA

• Teaching/Training qualification or willingness to acquire them

• IT experience in relevant CAD software – Solidworks, Techsoft 2D Design

Hours of work

8.15am – 4.15pm, Monday to Friday, with a one hour unpaid lunch break (35 hour week).

Holidays

Pro rata of the full time equivalent of 20 days per annum plus 8 bank holidays. As this is a term time only post, holiday pay will be incorporated into the annual salary.

Salary

Circa £19,500 per annum, which includes holiday pay.
